Will Food Wars Continue in Summer
As spring nears its end and season wrap-ups begin, it's a perfect time to look ahead at what anime are coming this summer. Any given season might bring plenty of new things to watch, but there will always be standout series that will have fans rallying from the very moment a new season announcement is made.
Whether it's an eagerly awaited reboot or a continuation of fan-favorite series, here are just a few anime releases to gear up for this summer.
The Devil is a Part-Timer!!
The Devil is a Part-Timer! is finally receiving a second season, and it's set to premiere sometime this July. The quirky seinen anime is a unique comedy isekai combo set in the fast-paced world of a fast food restaurant. When the Demon Lord Satan's plan to conquer Ente Isla fails, he and his general Alciel are forced to escape. They wind up in modern-day Tokyo and with the absence of magic in this world, are forced to live their lives as regular humans.
Satan, now going by Sadao Mao, takes a job at a fast-food restaurant and so begins his journey to make a mark in this new world.
The Devil is a Part Timer! is based on a long-running light novel series by Satoshi Wagahara that wrapped in August 2020. The first season aired in 2013 and ran for 13 episodes. The second season was announced last March, a perfect treat for eager fans who'd been waiting for the hilarious series to continue to be adapted. Whether anime fans want a different flavor of isekai or a refresher before Season 2, Season 1 is available to stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll, or Funimation.
Spriggan
Spriggan is an Original Net Anime (ONA) premiering on Netflix on July 18. It's based on the Cold War-era sci-fi action manga written by Hiroshi Takashige and illustrated by Ryoji Minagawa. The series also received a film adaptation in 1998 that was supervised by Akira's Katsuhiro Otomo.
The Netflix ONA follows Yu Ominae, a Spriggan agent for the ORCAM Corporation tasked with locating ancient artifacts from a lost civilization that would otherwise pose a threat to humanity if they were to fall in the wrong hands. With all kinds of armies looking to use these artifacts to further their individual goals, it's up to Yu and the other Spriggan to prevent mutually assured destruction.
The ONA serves as a reboot of the groundbreaking 1998 film and will consist of six episodes, each clocking in at about double the length of a regular anime episode. If its intense trailers weren't already an indication of what to expect, Spriggan is a must-see for its action-packed, sci-fi thrills and approach to an alternate history dystopia.
Tokyo Mew Mew New
Right up there in the ranks of powerful and unforgettable magical girl series is Tokyo Mew Mew. Immediately recognizable for its designs, the popular series is set to receive a reboot in July.
With the first trailers appearing to show a new role for one of the main cast members, fans are keen to see how this reboot adapts the original manga and anime, and whether the success of this reboot will lead to subsequent anime adaptations of the series' many sequels and spinoffs.
Tokyo Mew Mew New follows Ichigo Momomiya, a twelve-year-old girl who suddenly receives magical powers after her DNA is infused with that of the endangered Iriomote wild cat. Ichigo, along with five other girls infused with the DNA of endangered animals, must use their special abilities as the Mew Mews to protect the planet from the aliens that seek to destroy it. The reboot is set to be simulcasted by HIDIVE in July.
Kakegurui Twin
Kakegurui Twin is both a spin-off and prequel ONA to the gambling series Kakegurui that will premiere on Netflix on August 4. Kakegurui is a popular shonen series that centers on the students of the elite private school Hyakkou Academy and the dangerously high-stakes gambling the students take part in.
Kakegurui Twin will follow Mary Saotome, the rival to Kakegurui's protagonist Yumeko Jabami, and takes place a year prior to the main series. Mary quickly became a fan favorite for her strong, engaging presence in the original show and more visible character arc.
Fans are understandably excited to have a series that will follow her rise in Hyakkou Academy's world of gambling and the growth of her notorious reputation. The series will be animated by MAPPA, a studio best known for their beautiful and fluid animation in series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Yuri!!! On Ice, Dorohedoro, and Attack on Titan's final season.
Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun
Rounding out the list of new and returning anime to look forward to is Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, the second season of the seinen sci-fi adventure series. The new season is a direct sequel to the popular series' third film, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, which was released in 2020.
The season airs on July 6 and HIDIVE confirmed it will stream the series. The first season aired in 2017, but its thirteen episodes quickly hooked fans with its impressive storytelling, world-building, and attention to lush visual detail.
Made in Abyss takes place in a world where a sprawling cave system called the Abyss is the only place left unexplored to humanity. The Abyss is filled with wondrous creatures and artifacts, fascinating the people that endeavor to explore the cave system.
The story follows a little orphan girl named Riko who lives in a town at the edge of an entrance to the Abyss. Her mother was a famous explorer said to have died while inside the Abyss. When Riko receives a message supposedly from her mother, Riko sets off to the deepest level of the Abyss to find her. Season 1 is currently available on Amazon Prime Video and HIDIVE.
There's still time for fans to dive into or catch up on these anime before the summer anime season kicks off. With engaging stories, characters, and visual design it's no wonder that fans are looking forward to the premiere dates of these series.
